[edit]The article says he was "born in Stirlingshire", but that's not really true. He was born in Kilmadock House near Doune. The Kilmadock area is close to the border between Perthshire and Stirlingshire, but I think it was always in Perthshire. It's now in the Stirling unitary authority (which people call Stirlingshire, but really shouldn't, as the two are utterly different entities with entirely unrelated boundaries).
Perhaps a better wording would be "Born in Kilmadock House near Doune, and raised in the schoolhouse of the village of Cambusbarron near Stirling".
References:
- Cambusbarron village website (says "born in Perthshire")
- scottish-towns.co.uk, which says "although now in Stirlingshire, Doune was originally part of the parish of Kilmadock in the county of Perthshire"
- The Grierson Trust also says Perthshire.
A lot of sites do say he was born in Stirlingshire, but, well, they're wrong. 81.154.240.19 19:42, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)
The location given for his birth in the register (held by the Scottish National archives and publicly available on ScotlandsPeople 1898 362/21) is Deanston in the parish of Kilmadock, Perthshire, whose Wikipedia article gives Doune and Deanston as separate settlements (they are separated by, among other things, a river) Delahays (talk) 11:37, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

Coined the Term
[edit]He actually did not coin the term "documentary." It's been said so many times that this has been taken by many as a simple fact. I am, at present, watching a documentary about Grierson and, indeed, this agrees with what I learned in film school... he didn't coin the term. Of course, this leads us to the question... who did? I think this article needs a going over. There seems to be some facts here that are not really facts and it would be lovely if someone who really enjoys this subject would research and re-write this. 75.48.4.160 (talk) 00:15, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

The statement that Grierson returned to the UK in 1927 with the notion that documentary film could help solve the problems of the Great Depression (usually held to have begun in 1929) is either a chronological or an editing disaster or both, or a claim that Grierson was gifted with unique foresight. It would be useful to know whichDelahays (talk) 09:42, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
Going through the filmography I came across the title "Laxdale Hall" - a title I remembered vaguely as that of a commercial feature of the fifties (and Laxdale, by the way, is in Lewis, though the locations are around Applecross on the other side of the Minch, as Grierson would well have known). It turned out to have its own Wikipedia article, which doesn't mention Grierson by name - only in a side box does the name "Group 3" occur. Shouldn't the filmography be broken down to relate more closely to Grierson's various roles as producer (as e.g.in Group 3) in the UK and Canada at different points in his career?Delahays (talk) 11:19, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
