Megalodon
[edit]Hello Stefan!
I have dedicated my considerable time to massively improve the "Megalodon article" with latest and reliable information and I have recently noticed that some people who are not members of the wikipedia have tried to vandalise this article and the "registered members" have to use the "undo" command to prevent this. So if possible, kindly place some "editing restrictions" on this article, according to which only the "registered members" of the Wikipedia are allowed to edit this article and those who are not members of the wiki community are prevented from editing it. This article has been nominated for GA Class and I want this process to go smoothly and without any problems.
--LeGenD 12:48, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- If the above possible suggestion is not possible than you can provide me some other suggestions to control vandalism. Please keep in mind that I am not against editing of this article and any person is welcome to make useful contributions in this article because I do believe in Wiki's Nuetral policy but I do not appreciate acts of vandalism. You can reply in my "talk page."
- Hello again! Thanks for appreciating my work!
- The serious signs of Vandalism are visible in the revision history of the main article. Take a look at this page: [[1]] and you will see a guy whose IP address is 86.148.53.199 and this guy tried to remove lots of data from the main article and posted bad information in return. You can notice the reduction in the size of the article when this guy edited. Though a "registered wiki member" reverted the main article to its original state and this is for the second time that a "registered wiki member" had to revert this article in its original state to stop Vandalism. So I think that this article deserves some serious attention in case of protection against Vandalism. Anyways! Thanks for providing me some useful suggestions. So do you now think that this article should be at-least semi-protected?
- I think that you are under-estimating the level of Vandalism that is taking place in the main article in recent days. Re-check the history page again and you will notice a revert for the 3rd time and this happened a short time ago. Also you misjudged my intentions regarding editing policy of Wikipedia. I am never against editing of any article including this one and people are always welcomed to make useful contributions. But Vandalism is not something that should be taken lightly because it damages the integrity of the article. Anyways! I am not requesting you to assist me in this regard but only notified you, so that you might want to keep this article under check (if interested) and thanks for your suggestions.
- Also, do you think that the article currently meets GA criteria?

Bot activity
[edit]I was going over the list of bots and noticed that StefanBot (talk · contribs) has not edited in a very long time. Is this bot still active and if not, would you object to it being de-flagged? Shiraz count
[edit]Hello, this is how I did my count of Syrah wines at Systembolaget:
- Type in a search for "Syrah" on the front page.
- Inspect the 230 hits manually, so my count may be +/- a few wines.
This search, while a little clumsy, includes both regular products and special order products. You probably went for a detailed search by country. Then don't remember that you have to go another form for special order products, per country. My intention was originally to see "from what countries are there Syrah wines at all". I found more Syrah-labelled New World wines than I had thought, so that's why I counted them. Tomas e (talk) 18:30, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Megalodon
[edit]I've done a quick bit of copy-editing on it, but mostly I've just reworded what was there, when it could actually do with some rearrangement. I don't think it is FA material yet - it lacks precision and is overcited in places. The pop culture list wouldn't survive FAC either. Yomanganitalk 23:31, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
- Just thought I'd give you my opinion - and I see I obviously wasn't concentrating when I copy-edited! Yomanganitalk 00:35, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Sharks ;)
[edit]Hi Stefan
you don't know me, but I'm need help with something i think you'll love. i recently made a Shark wikia, (granted it's very small and I'm not good with some of the templates, and of making thousands of articles) but I'm hoping you will be interested in this, an entire Wikia dedicated to sharks. you can do what you want to the wikia, make new articles i made a updated list of the List of sharks, not much introduction, but big list of sharks. the address is [2] feel free to come and conquer, you can even use the project here to add more details to the sharks. anyway i'll be up and if your interested, visit and write me thanks --LeafGreen Ranger (talk) 21:10, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- well you can input more information and make templates just for sharks, and add as much data as you can with the articles you have about sharks here, the site is brand new and doesn't have much info yet, because worried about copying and also about find information, i'm in high school near the end of school so i can't do much i can however promote you and your team to editor status if you decide to join, you add more info about sharks then wikipedia can offer and include every single species with details--LeafGreen Ranger (talk) 07:22, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
SUL
[edit]Hey Stefan! Concerning Unified login, I would like to ask if you would be so kind to rename your account? That would allow me to add it to the global one. I guess you’ll hesitate, but nevertheless I did not want to miss my chance to ask you. Thank you. Best wishes, Stefan on German Wikipedia (and almost all other wikimedia wikis) --84.174.28.214 (talk) 20:05, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for your answers and sorry for being late answering you.
- Well, right, I used the account st-fl for some years. But later, it was unhandy to me, so I decided to rename my account – I even thought about different account names, but Stefan really seemed obvious to be, because of the beautiful first name we share ;-) So I took a look at Stefan’s log and contributions. He had no valid edits and no mail adress given in the profile. That made me happy and I asked Raymond to rename my account and usurp Stefan. I did not think about SUL in that moment, because it has been announced too many times before, so I did not know that this time it really came.
- Furthermore, it is not my fault when the SUL devepolers decide to give sysops the possibility to globalize their account first. Go and complain there. I cannot evaluate your solutions at the moment, because as far as I know, there is not official policy How to treat name conflicts yet. So, my suggestion is first to wait and then to “fight”, as you call it. As you may imagine, I do not want to “give up” the global account. Oh my God, that really sounds like war or something :-( --Stefan »Στέφανος« ‽ // 84.174.39.58 (talk) 12:23, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, that is what I state. --Stefan »Στέφανος« ‽ // --84.174.40.132 (talk) 20:51, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Let me add that you wouldn't have had the chance to get the global account Stefan even if you had been the first to try to create one. To the software, it doesn't matter how long you've been contributing, and it doesn't even matter how many contributions you have if there is a local account with sysop privileges. And since the only account with sysop privileges is Stefan@dewiki, dewiki is the homewiki of Stefan. And that's why the global account belongs to St-fl. —Pill (talk) 18:19, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yes I think I know that now although it have not be very clearly described anywhere. Pill, do you know the story, see de:Benutzer Diskussion:Stefan. I have a 5 year old account, 1 week before SUL is turned on for sysops ST-fl renames his account to Stefan and then gets the global account. I am a bit sad about that and am trying to convince St-fl to undo the rename (and he is trying to make me give up my username). As a bureaucrat do you have any idea on if there will ever be a forced renames of accounts for cases like ours? --Stefan talk 01:05, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- Stefan, St-fl acted perfectly in accordance with the rules, he didn't do anything prohibited. He pointed out that he didn't request the rename with the intention to overtake your username, and, because we have no way to prove whether that's right or wrong, you can't accuse him of having done exactly that. The fact that accounts with sysop privileges are preferred over accounts with no special rights, is not his fault either. While I fully understand your anger and sadness about that, it is extremely unethical of you to urge him to give up his global account—you just have no right to do so. You may complain about that to the developers who set the rules by programming the software accordingly, but it is not St-fl's responsibility to solve your problem. Regarding your question, I am quite sure that you will also be affected of the second stage, i. e. that you will also get renamed. It would be contrary to the aims of CentralAuth to allow both local and global accounts in the long term, so I think forced rename is just a matter of time. But of course I don't know that for sure, so you may want to contact one of the developers involved. —Pill (talk) 11:27, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- Why is it unethical to ask or urge him? Is that not what I am expected to do? I can not ask for anyone else to do anything unless I have tried to solve my issue with the user. I MUST discuss with him before I can do anything. I agree with you that he have followed all the rules, he have stated that he did not think about SUL when he renamed his account, but since I knew that SUL was just about to happen just before he renamed I assumed that he did that also and accused him in my first post, I have apologized for that and said sorry. I just think the rules are not correct and I would like him to agree that there was a loophole in the rules which he used by luck and that he can be nice and change his username back and make things according to the intent of the SUL rules. If he does not want to do that it is acceptable, but that I will try to change the rules or get an exception, but no one will listen to me if I have not tried to discuss user to user first, don't you agree? If you think I'm acting the wrong way please advice me on how you think I should proceed instead, if I want to keep the user that I have had for 5 years, that according to all intents that I have read about SUL I should get the global account for. --Stefan talk 11:48, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- I totally agree with you but your "proposition" on his talk page (see here, quote "As things are I consider you to having stumbled on a loophole in the 'rules' [...] I will keep the en account, you get the global account, but if at any point a forced account renaming is started you will give up the global account name to me. Please write a answer to that question where you promise me to give up the global account before or when I'm forced to give up my en account or state that you will not do that and I will start checking if there is any chance to get your account rename reversed.") didn't sound very friendly to my ears as you make it sound as if he had any responsibility to give the global account to you. I may have misinterpreted your comment, and apologize if I did. —Pill (talk) 18:06, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, maybe it is not worded as friendly as it could be, it is just that I find it wrong for me to try to get higher involvement without having tried all possible solution inbetween us users, I made a posposal where I give something up and so would he, I think that is resonable solution and it is as far as I will go for now, until he or someone else can come up with a different solution that I can accept. But I must have a final say from him, his response so far is 'lets wait'. For me I think that will result in wait until it is to late, so yes I'm trying to 'force' the issue, I'm trying to make him make up his mind and state his position now. It is not to be considered as a threat, just stating my position and I just want information, I do not want to do as he did and ask for my account without talking to me, I want to be open, clear and frank, but that often make me sound agressive or unfriendly I know, but it was not my intent, and I apologize for that. --Stefan talk 00:40, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Cork taints
[edit]Hello, when it comes to your recent edits of Alternative wine closures, I must say that I have never before encountered a claim above 10%, with rates from statistically significant samples (rather than peoples' estimates from memory) being something like 2-5%. "Anecdotal evidence from wine professionals suggests that the rate may be substantially higher" without a reference does in my opinion not fulfil WP:RS requirements. It seems that the cork industry and the alternative closure industry quite frequently "plant" various numbers that work in their favour, so I think we need to be very strict with sourcing on this subject. Also, since I'm not a Wine Spectator subscriber, could you confirm that the 7% figure refers specifically to cork taint rather than wine faults in general? Tomas e (talk) 14:37, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for explaining your source! I have Alternative wine closures - which has shown to be prone to commercial linkspam - but not Cork taint on my watchlist, so I must admit not having checked the latter article that closely. I'll have to the bottom of that article some time. It seems that Jamie Goode commonly quotes rates of 4-5%. Tomas e (talk) 18:44, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
a few problems
[edit]when i was doing the list of shark species on my shark wiki, i did more research and found most have problems,
- Most have no common names
- A Few have the exact same common name, example Blotched catshark, is both Asymbolus funebris & Scyliorhinus meadi and different sites say this is correct
- Also most lists i found have different genus, with the same shark, like a mix up,
- and The finale most of the lists i look show sharks that i can't find anyway, like they're made up
here are the sites i like to use, you can visit my site to see the list but here is the sources i have been using (i've been using others to, but not as much)
this will come in handy for your list here, but the help users and people know more about sharks, good luck (i have been doing a lot of work on the list i didn't do much on the pages for the sharks so if your still interested, you can come and invited more people to come, i'll make sure i make you a editor, plus i won't do the pages because i'm busy with the list and also i don't like to copy and paste) --LeafGreen Ranger (talk) 14:19, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Whatever you decide is fine with me. The article looks better everytime I look at it. I see you even have an image on there now. Sorry. This is the first time I've nominated an article and I thought I could close it. --Npnunda (talk) 02:25, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit]No problems, all is well now anyway, an ANI report would only hurt the encyclopedia, everyone was acting in good faith so no worries. Thanks for helping sort things out. :) Aujourd'hui, maman est morte (talk) 02:26, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- We were not seeing eye to eye. Buzz was showing up on an astronaut page under catagory: People currently in space. Rollback was wrong I know that now but good faith prevails. Thank you for your concern though. --Npnunda (talk) 02:37, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- No problem, good that all is fine. I just did not want a ANI case that I though could be settled by just a apology, now it did so I'm happy, now go back editing!! :-) --Stefan talk 02:40, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Sharks
[edit]Hi Stefan,
I saw that you were the last one to edit the Caribbean reef shark article. The reason I point this out is that I am a highschool student trying to raise an article of my choice to GA status. And as you can probably guess I am interested in doing my article on the Caribbean reef shark. I was wondering by any chance if you would be interested in assisting me? If you have any questions refer my school project page Wikipedia:WikiProject AP Biology 2008. --Duckhunter92 (talk) 20:10, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Stefan, Unfortunitely I found no helpful studies on the caribbean reef shark so i shifted my focus to Shortfin mako shark. I don't know if you are still interested in assisting me, but if you are please let me know. Oh and by the way thanks for all the shark links. They were VERY helpful. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Duckhunter92 (talk • contribs) 14:55, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Shortfin Mako
[edit]I noticed earlier you said you may be busy at the present time. NO RUSH. Whenever you can get around to helping me would be perfectly fine. I have the whole semester to finish the article, but i would much rather finish it before then by all means. The article itself is pretty well layed out but lacks much information. I plan on adding information but would love your help to make it look nice and organized, such as a good or featured article would. Feel free to look in my sandbox to see what I am working on at the present time. I plan on working on one section at a time and then introducing it into the actual article. --Duckhunter92 (talk) 19:25, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
question
[edit]Ok Im really not quite sure how to do all that. So is there a Citation maker you want me to use to make this step easier or is the one I am using ok?? I dont care if I have to put more information into the citation maker, this is perfectly fine. I just want to make sure I am citing correctly. Oh and after I get this part figured out I would like to know how to use the two of the same refernce tags in different parts of the article.--Duckhunter92 (talk) 21:37, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit]I have been extremely busy lately and have not had to work on the page. I have to have the article ready for peer review by Nov. 19. This means I would like to add a lot of information and let you or others proof it. Now I am focusing on amount of creditable content instead of seeing if it is already stated a different way. If you would please proof everything I add to make sure I dont make anyone mad.--Duckhunter92 (talk) 01:32, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Hey there, I noticed your message at Template:FootballSeason about needing StringFunctions for your template to work. I'm not sure what this template is supposed to do, but the issue of turning "9" into "09" is trivial:
{{padleft:9|2|0}} = 09
{{padleft:10|2|0}} = 10
Does that solve your problem? —Remember the dot (talk) 23:27, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- (replying to message on my talk page) - Okay, I guess I'm confused. {{#time:y|0:00 2009}} gives you 09. What more do you need? —Remember the dot (talk) 04:16, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
- (replying to message on my talk page) - I think I see what you're trying to do now. Just use padleft; it's very simple and will work whether or not the year is less than 10 (see the examples above). —Remember the dot (talk) 06:13, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Outline update - Full Steam Ahead! - 06/18/2009
[edit]Several members of the WikiProject have been hard at work.
Buaidh has been building and refining the outlines on the U.S. States, the states' historical outlines, and the Historical outline of the United States. Lately, his edits have dominated the project's watchlist readout. (I think he's overdue for a barnstar or two. hint hint)
Penubag has been working on medals for all the main branches of the OOK, and has completed the OOK WikiProject's animated advert banner (see below).
Highfields has been filling in the currencies for each country on their respective outlines.
NuclearWarfare and Thehelpfulone have been busy with WP:AWB, posting banners and notices, and helping our sister project, the Index WikiProject, get established. Indexes work hand-in-hand with the outlines and are prominently linked to from the top of most of them. And the outlines, which serve as tables of contents, are only as good as the pages they link to.
Since we started integrating (linking) the OOK and its support pages into the encyclopedia and into the Wikipedia community, activity on outlines has been increasing. Though there's still much left to do.
But I digress. There are a couple more...
Stefan is building the Outline of sharks.
MacMed has joined our advanced wiki-tools team, and is currently adding links to outlines in the corresponding subject articles' see also sections.
Welcome to the team!
WPOOK's advert banner has gone live!
[edit]Penubag has finished this WikiProject's animated advert banner, and it is now being displayed on the Wikipedia ads template which in turn is displayed on about 2000 user pages. Each time someone access one of those pages, there is a 1 in 184 chance of them viewing this:
Wikipedia ads | file info – #184 |
If you'd like to display the banner on your userpage locked-on to the ad as above, use the following code:
{{Wikipedia ads|ad=184}}
(By the way, it's been awhile since we've barnstarred Penubag).
Watchers needed!
[edit]If you haven't already, please add the entire project's watchlist to your watchlist. Here's how:
- From the edit window, copy and paste Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist into your raw watchlist.
- Or go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist using Related changes and click on "Related changes" in the toolbox menu in Wikipedia's sidebar on the left hand side of the screen.
Check the watchlist every time you log on!
[edit]I forgot to mention this step above. :)

See the DRV discussion at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2009 June 7#Outline of Islamic and Muslim related topics.
A diamond buried in project space
[edit]- When G716 found the page "Learn" tucked away as a subpage of the Probability WikiProject, he thought "This deserves to be in the article space", and moved it to the encyclopedia. See Outline of probability.
Recruiting
[edit]Recruiters needed. Drop me a note if you are interested.
Advice from the mentors
[edit]- Astatine-210, Strdst grl, and Willscrlt - link to the outlines from the corresponding subject articles' see also sections - this is underway by MacMed (non-country outlines) and User talk:NuclearWarfare (counry outlines).
- Astatine-210 - add a link to the outlines to the disambiguation pages of the corresponding subjects - good idea. Since "Outline" is just the type of page, not the subject, I think these might qualify for inclusion on disambiguation pages. We need someone to look into the relevant guidelines on this.
- SimonTrew - provide a badge (userbox) for WPOOK members to add to their user pages - Penubag will have one for us soon.
- Zachary crimsonwolf - create a card explaining outlines, and send it to everyone you know, and make it viral (by including a request for the recipients to send the card to everyone they know) - this task has been split in three:
- Creation of a "thank you for your interest" card which introduces (explains) outlines, to send to queriers, new participants to discussions, those who seem to be confused about outlines, etc.
- Creation of a thank you card / invitation to the WPOOK, to send to users we see working on outlines, including a request for them to invite others whom they think might be interested
- weebiloobil - contact Wikignomes - OK...
- 3. Creation of an invitation to Wikignomes, with a brief rundown on the types of tasks there are for them to do on the outlines. The invitation will include a request for them to invite anyone they think would enjoy working on outlines.
- weebiloobil - add examples to Wikipedia:Outlines - more examples will be added as suitable outlines are completed
- weebiloobil - add a picture to Wikipedia:Outlines (it doesn't have to be relevant), to provide atmosphere and to break it up visually and add a splash of color - will do, and we'll add a caption to make it relevant, with a link to the outline on that subject. Thank you for the idea.
- Zachary crimsonwolf - ask Jimbo Wales to bestow the award(s) for the country outlines contest, once you get it going first - we'll give that a try
- Zachary crimsonwolf - ask everyone in the project to inform their acquaintances around Wikipedia about the OOK - will do, as soon as the cards
- UzEE - collaborate with all the WikiProjects you share scope with - we've placed a banner on their talk pages, and have placed task notices on some. We'll be posting more tasks, and plan to create a section on contents system development and maintenance for each WikiProject page itself.
- SriMesh - if you can't get outlines added to next year's WikiCup, then create your own WikiCup-like contest - there's 6 months left to this year to address reservations and work out the details at WikiCup. In the meantime, there's the 200-WikiProject contest, which needs input.
More outline tasks
[edit]- Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Drafts/Outline of chocolate draft - our current outline collaboration!
- Outline of psychology - someone moved a big chunk of this article to the talk page, leaving a big gap in the outline. Editors are needed to add subheadings and links.
- See also links - add {{main|Outline of x}} (where "x" is the subject) to the see also section of the corresponding subject article of each outline
New outlines in article space
[edit]- Outline of sharks - under construction in article space
- Outline of Hinduism (converted from "List of Hinduism-related topics")
New outline drafts

Keep up the great work
[edit]I'm impressed with the level of enthusiasm and work going into the outlines. I'm proud to be working with each of you.

Outline collaboration #2: Outline of Gibraltar
[edit]This outline is approaching completion.
I added a bunch more links, finding them with the following Google site-specific searches of Wikipedia:
(You can use the wikicode for the links above as the basis for new searches - just replace "Gibraltar" with any other country or region name).
Request: please redirect the redlinks! (bluelinking...)
[edit]The redlinks need to be bluelinked where possible. The most useful way is to create redirects leading to the material (which is usually included in a section of an article - see Wikipedia:Redirect#Redirects to page sections. That way, when the redirect pages are replaced by the actual articles, the links will already point to the right places.
Please take a crack at it, and bluelink a few.
Thank you.
Good luck.
Have fun.
The Transhumanist 00:44, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
That was fun. :)
The Transhumanist 23:32, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
Guess who edited the outline you created?
[edit]I noticed that your creation has caught the attention of Rich Farmbrough.
He's like way up at the top of the Wikipedia editor list (he used to be at the very top for years, and still is if you include all the bots he runs).
Nice job!

Outline update - Push push push - 06/25/2009
[edit]Work is proceeding apace...
- Julian is working on getting a bot account (and he delivered this update as his trial run).
- Penubag is working on the Project page and upcoming contest.
- Buaidh is developing all of the U.S. state historical outlines.
- Tarheel95 is writing a proposal to add a link to the Main Page leading to the the OOK.
- Highfields is integrating the OOK into the encyclopedia by deorphanizing outlines by placing a {{main}} link in the see also section of the subject articles that have a corresponding outline.
- I've been trying to keep up with them. :)
- New members
- Minnecologies - developing Outline of forestry and is watching the big picture.
- Mnation2 - improving Outline of Lebanon
- Hatnotes
The current consensus is that we can't place a hatnote leading to an outline at the top of a subject articles unless the outline being presented is of at least the same quality-level as the article.
- What's next...
Improve outline quality by completing them.
Place hatnotes for the outlines of high enough quality.
Guidelines pertaining to outlines need to be updated. Outlines emerged as a class of pages only a few months ago, and most of the relevant guidelines don't cover them specifically. For example, Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists is incredibly out of date.
Invite wikignomes, wikielves, and wikifairies (all 2500+ of them) to help on the outlines .
Identify 600 more subjects with coverage extensive enough to justify outlines, create rudimentary drafts for them, and post notices to the corresponding WikiProjects and subject talk pages to help build them.
Convert outlines titled "List of" to outline articles, and add them to the OOK. There are a few hundred of these. Conversion instructions are needed.
Add a description of outlines to About Wikipedia and Wikipedia:Basic navigation, and add tips about outlines to the WP:TOTD and Tips library.
- Keep up the great work!

Question about outline quality and eligibility for hatnote placement
[edit]Is there any outline currently that meets good article criteria? If not, my suggestion is that we should make that a priority. If we do then I think we should start a collaboration to get it up to featured status. We really need a featured outline. It would benefit our project tremendously. Burningview (talk) 21:37, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- The people over at FLC don't understand outline standards, and outlines are so new that their standards are still under development. All the guidelines pertaining to lists that apply to outlines need to be updated, as do all the MOS guidelines pertaining to outlines. Otherwise, generic list guidelines will be applied to outlines at FLC, and on the OOK pages (which used to be called "Lists of basic topics" we've been doing things differently for years. Even if that were done, FLC has some standards above and beyond list guidelines that don't fit outlines. What is needed is a Feature Outlines department, and that's a long ways off. Patience is the best strategy for now. The Transhumanist 22:11, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- But if we can only put hat-notes for outlines that are as good as the pages, how do we define quality of outlines? --Stefan talk 11:58, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
- For now, impression. If you feel equally or more impressed by an outline than you do by the subject article, then add a hatnote to the subject article. If the outline serves as an outline as well as the article serves as an article, that's pretty impressive. For example, compare:
"incomplete" hatnotes
[edit]Because outlines are a type of summary, their "completeness" is highly subjective. What is included in a summary is discretionary and not subject to a definite criterion.
Therefore, statements of completeness are inappropriate. Please don't post them on the outlines.
Thank you.
The Transhumanist 21:32, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
A hatnote is a message at the very top of a page. The hatnotes I was referring to were these, about the incompleteness of the page:
{{expand outline}}
It's unnecessary clutter. And it implies that someday we'll be able to say with authority when the list is complete. But we never will be able to, because it is a summary, and summaries are by definition incomplete: summaries don't include everything, which is why they're called "summaries".
"Complete summary" is an oxymoron.
And by extension, so is "incomplete summary". A summary can be as long or as short as desired. You can summarize something in a single word.
The Transhumanist 18:40, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Request for feedback
[edit]Minnecologies has done an incredible amount of work on Outline of forestry and posted a note to me on my talk page requesting feedback.
I've posted my observations at Talk:Outline of forestry#Finished outline review.
Please take a look at the outline and let Minnecologies know what you think of it on the outline's talk page.
Thank you.

- Compare that with shark article traffic.
- How can we increase the outline's traffic?
OOK's highest priority task - here's a piece of it for you
[edit]Stefan,
I'm splitting this task up for everyone on the team to work on...
The government branches sections are in error on many of the country outlines.
Since those are in article space, we need to fix those ASAP! This is our most important task right now.
Here's a list of links that goes right to that section: User:The Transhumanist/List of country outline government sections.
I'm working on U-Z.
Your task is to complete and correct these:
- Outline of Kazakhstan#Government and politics of Kazakhstan
- Outline of Kenya#Government and politics of Kenya
- Outline of Kiribati#Government and politics of Kiribati
- Outline of North Korea#Government and politics of North Korea
- Outline of South Korea#Government and politics of South Korea
- Outline of Kosovo#Government and politics of Kosovo
- Outline of Kuwait#Government and politics of Kuwait
- Outline of Kyrgyzstan#Government and politics of Kyrgyzstan
WP:LINKY is especially useful for this.
Let me know when you are done, so I can check them over.
Thank you.
Good luck.
Have fun.

Outline Update - Exhausted - 07/10/2009
[edit]I'm sorry that I haven't been available to assign tasks lately. For the past 3 days (not including today) I've been almost totally consumed in discussions concerning the location and very existence of outlines. Today I finally broke free and got back to work on outlines. Felt good.
A great deal has been happening with outlines and behind the scenes. I just don't have time to tell you all about it this time around. Here's the best I can do...
- How to watch what's going on with outlines
If you'd like a bird's eye view of everything that's happening with respect to outlines, see this page:
- WP:OOKWL - watchlist for copying and pasting into your raw watchlist.
Or go to these pages (and click on "Related changes" in the sidebar's toolbox menu):
- WP:OOKRC - a version of the above watchlist for use with "Related changes".
- WP:OOKDIR - a list of key pages related to the OOK, along with their shortcuts.
- WP:OOKDISC - list of discussions pertaining to outlines.
- Recently converted to outlines
These outline articles, which were named "List of...", have been converted to an OOK format:
- Outline of martial arts (was "List of martial arts-related topics")
- Outline of wine - converted by Stefan (was called "List of wine-related topics")
- Outline of the creation-evolution controversy (was "List of topics in the creation-evolution controversy")
- Outline of actuarial science (was "Actuarial topics")
- Outline of industrial organization (was "List of topics in industrial organization")
- Recently merged into outlines
There are a lot of "List of" articles that are outlines. Some of them are on the same subjects as the "Outline of" articles. The following one have been recently merged:
The Transhumanist 01:14, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Stefan...
[edit]I was just wondering what interesting subject you'd be adding to the WP:OOK next. :)
If you can't think of anything, I just converted this: Outline of ancient Rome. Maybe you can touch it up.
The Transhumanist 02:01, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Wine styles
[edit]Why did you add Category:Wine styles to Syrah with this edit? First, there is very little homogeneity of style to all Syrah wines and surely we don't want to list all grape varieties as "wine styles" as well??? To me, "Barossa Shiraz" could possibly be called wine style, but so far I haven't seen any articles of this type. Regards, Tomas e (talk) 15:13, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
Outline Update - Basking in the light of knowledge - 07/28/2009
[edit]Phase two of outline integration (de-orphanizing outlines by adding links leading to them into article see also sections) is nearly complete. The better that outlines are integrated into the encyclopedia, the more use they will be to readers.
Due to greater exposure through outline integration, and with most of the OOK team on school summer vacation, development activity on outlines has increased a lot...
- New members
- News: Outline of Palestine survives AfD
- The outline was nominated for deletion for being too general in scope. The consensus was overwhelmingly for keeping it.
- The most memorable comment was posted by Mandsford: I like the poetic name, anyway. [Outline of Palestine]. "Master Plan of Pakistan" and "Rough Sketch of Bangladesh" would be good too.
- Special thanks to Tiamut for greatly improving the outline, and helping to save it from AfD.
- To keep track of outline AfDs and other outline-related discussions, see WP:OOKDISC.
- Who's active on Wikipedia this summer?
- Courtesy of Rich Farmbrough, here's a list of editors by their edit counts over the previous month (8th June to 8th July).
- It would be nice to get the most prolific Wikipedians involved with WP:WPOOK. If you can, find a good reason to contact one or more of them, and invite them to work on a relevant outline - or all 500!
- Who's been up to what?
- Buaidh, Highfields, and Gimme danger have been working on the government sections of the country outlines. Being that there are about 240 of these, with critical information being filled in on each, this is by far the hardest and most important chore of this WikiProject right now.
- Penubag is working on a redesign of the top OOK page.
- Tiamut has done an incredible job developing the Outline of Palestine.
- And kudos also go to Eu.stefan for his work on Outline of Buddhism.
Thank you.
Here's what else has been going on...
- New outlines
- Recently created outlines include:
- Recently converted to outlines
- These outline articles, which were named "List of...", have been converted to an OOK format and added to the OOK:
- Outline of the Vietnam War - was "List of Vietnam War-related topics" - TT
- Outline of combinatorics - was "List of combinatorics topics" - converted by Minnecologies
- Outline of category theory - was "List of category theory topics" converted by Minnecologies
- Outline of scientific method - was "List of scientific method topics" - TT
- Outline of ancient Rome - was "List of topics related to ancient Rome" - TT
- Recently merged into outlines
- There are a lot of "List of" articles that are outlines. Some of them are on the same subjects as the "Outline of" articles. The following articles have been recently merged into OOK pages:
- Outlines that have been tagged
- Tags are requests to fix a problem or improve an article in a particular way. Unless we want the tags to sit there for an extended period of time cluttering up the outlines (we don't), it is up to us to fulfill those requests or attend to underlying misassumptions (if any).
- Outline of literature - tagged as Original research
- Outline of ancient Greece - tagged as under construction
- Outline of mathematics - tagged as in need of attention from an expert
- Outline of arithmetic - tagged as not citing any references or sources.
- Outline of immunology - tagged as an orphan
- Outline of organic chemistry - tagged as an orphan
- Outline of psychology - tagged as in need of attention from an expert on the subject
- Outline of family and consumer science - tagged as an orphan
- Outline of energy storage - tagged as an orphan
- Outline of nuclear technology - tagged as an orphan
- Outline of ergonomics - tagged as an orphan
- Outline of construction - tagged as an orphan
- Outline of machines - tagged as an orphan
- Outline of free software - tagged as an orphan
- Outline of design - tagged as containing original research or unverified claims, and needing references or sources
- Outline of automobiles - tagged as an orphan
- I can't stress enough the importance of watching
- With so many outlines (now over 500), and a growing number of support pages (guidelines, wikiproject pages, etc.), I can no longer keep up. I need your help watching over it all.
- If you'd like to omnisciently view everything "from above", see this page:
- WP:OOKWL - watchlist for copying and pasting into your raw watchlist.
- Or go to these pages (and click on "Related changes" in the sidebar's toolbox menu):
- WP:OOKRC - a version of the above watchlist for use with "Related changes".
- WP:OOKDIR - a list of key pages related to the OOK, along with their shortcuts.
- WP:OOKDISC - list of discussions pertaining to outlines.
- What's next?
There are a lot of contradictions in guidelines related to outlines. I'll be turning my attention to fixing those.
The number of "Outline of" articles is rapidly catching up to portals, and will probably pass them by the end of the summer!
Keep up the excellent work.
The Transhumanist 00:56, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
P.S.: Stephan, have you chosen your next subject? The last two you chose turned out great! I can hardly wait to see what you will come up with next. :)
We're working on something special...
[edit]...to award Buaidh for all his hard work.
It's at User:Penubag/Sandbox3.
But it's not done yet. Feel free to help improve it.
I'm hoping that everyone involved with the WP:WPOOK will sign it (please sign without a timestamp).
Thank you.

Outline Update - expanding the Outline of Knowledge - 2009-10-05
[edit]Time for some catching up...
- Special award and thanks to Buaidh
Congratulations and kudos to Buaidh, the first recipient of the Wikipedia World Developer Award, and the first inductee into the Outline of Knowledge WikiProject's Hall of Fame.
The award was announced about 2 months agos on the WikiProject's talk page, and on Wikipedia's Community Bulletin Board.
Buaidh created the historical outlines for all of the U.S. States, the U.S. capital, and most of the U.S. insular areas. He has also worked indefatigably day after day, improving all of the outlines of the U.S. States, and the outlines of all of the countries of the world!
- Who's been up to what?
- Buaidh, working hard on the country outlines.
- Highfields, MacMed, and I worked on the see also sections of the subject articles corresponding to the outlines (adding or updating the links to the relevant outlines and indexes).
- Wiki-Zombies
Discussions can sure be frustrating - try getting a proposal through on a guideline's talk page sometime. Most of the time, it seems like the opposition is mindlessly following each other, like...
Zombies. (You've got to see this).
- Outline of Knowledge
Yes, it's a proper noun. It's only proper, since we also have an article called Outline of knowledge which is about knowledge generically.
- OOK expansion!
After a couple month vacation, I'm ready to slam the gas pedal to the floor. Are you?
Things are speeding up!
Take a look...

Ok, i would like to learn to see how you do it. Is most editing in large part deleting content, I notice a lot of articles are very small? SpringSummerAutumn (talk) 09:50, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Counting editors
[edit]I used AWB to make a list of members of the category, sorted and removed everything beginning with "List of.." etc.. I then took a perly script I wrote for downloading and analysing history and changed it to read the user names and put them in a hash. I reported the size of the hash at the end of each history page. In theory it's a minor tweak to give a frequency of edits too. Rich Farmbrough, 19:37, 11 October 2009 (UTC).

[edit]I really don't care if the categories get deleted or not, their existence doesn't cause the encyclopedia any harm. However, having articles inappropriate categorizes does cause some harm. On the surface I agree with your common sense call for reason over the drama. If we are allowed to take care of these simple house keeping chores and clean up the horrendous mess of wine article categorization, that would be great and the encyclopedia benefits. But my fear is that the editors who objected to the clean up efforts previously as "out of process emptying" will continue to object to the clean up efforts if we remove inappropriate categories from wine articles. Your own clean up efforts, Stefan, have been reverted with the inappropriate cat re-added. I'm not sure how we will be able to make any progress in cleaning up the cat mess if these obviously wrong and unneeded cats are still around. AgneCheese/Wine 18:04, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Overlinking
[edit]Stefan, the policy is here: WP:OVERLINK, these excepts might help:
- Do not link to a page that redirects back to the page the link is on.
- avoid linking terms whose meaning can be understood by most readers of the English Wikipedia, including plain English words
- always consider providing a concise definition instead of or in addition to a link to another article.
Nevertheless, I won't rise to the challenge of starting an edit war ;) --Kudpung (talk) 02:17, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
- Stefan, I asked Tomas for an independent opinion - not you, and I am open to being wrong while you are apparently not. Please AGF and refrain from using combative tones, it would make life so much easier and pleasanter; articles about wine are really nothing to get emotional about. All it will do is drive people away from wanting to contribute.--Kudpung (talk) 04:45, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Stefan, thanks for working on Decompression sickness again, it's good to see you back. But would you have a look at MOS:ANDOR, please? It's really discouraged on Wikipedia, and there's always a better way of writing what you mean than using that construction. Regards, --RexxS (talk) 02:55, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
Reviewer granted
[edit]Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:27, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Suzuki RE5 article
[edit]Hi Stefan, I have returned to this article to try and address some of your comments. Particularly trying to reduce the "review" style. The article is not copied and pasted, it is written "ground up". I do have references for all of the article from magazine articles of the day and Suzuki factory press releases. But I just can't work out the wiki "language" for adding them (I gave up trying to upload the picture but it seems someone fixed that for me).
If this is of any use, I could reference the article in a "Word" document and perhaps email it to a Wiki editor who could then do it on the page?
Thanks,
PS: Just as an aside, an editor has helpfully referenced a couple of things and the source for these is listed at the end of the article. Both those sources are web based and both contain incorrect information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gtregs75 (talk • contribs) 03:01, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Outline update 2011-01-18, and an invitation...
[edit]Stefan,
I'm looking for someone insane enough to prepare an outline for the Featured list candidates process. The two outlines you have done the most work on present interesting possibilities. They are well developed and are more than half way to being finished to FL quality. To get there, the Outline of wine or the Outline of sharks need section leads, annotations, and reference citations. Do you think this is feasible? Are you interested?
Speaking of outlines, here's an update on the project, followed by an invitation...
We've undergone a name change: the project has been simplified to "WikiProject Outlines".
The current main focus is on increasing the availability of outlines. If readers can't find the outlines, the outlines can't help them. We need to figure out the best places to put links, and the best ways to attract external traffic directly to these pages.
While studying the link structure to outlines, I came across a navigation aid I forgot we had that you might find useful:
- If you'd like to use the main page with outline links instead of portal links, set Wikipedia:Main Page alternative (outline links) as your default main page. See the instructions.
Due to the occasional sniping attempt on outlines and their support pages, outlines now have an alert page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines/Article alerts. Please go there now and add it to your watchlist.
Tarheel95 and Robert Skyhawk are working on a project to track traffic to outline pages. Speaking of traffic...
A discussion on outline traffic analysis has been started on the Outlines WikiProject talk page. You are cordially invited to participate. Your input is greatly needed on possible ways to increase the availability of the outlines. All ideas and feedback are welcome. I look forward to seeing you there.
Sincerely, The Transhumanist 07:30, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
P.S.: don't forget to watchlist the alert page mentioned above. Cheers. -TT
P.P.S.:: I look forward to your reply to the opening paragraph above. -TT
- Hum, I considered the FL idea long time ago, but at that time the whole outline issue was very inflamed, I decided that it probably would just be shoot down. Now might be a better time .... I will consider, but will do more research one how FL really works, i.e. what lists get featured for and what is the most common issues. Then we will see. I will not do the wine outline, it is not good enough IMHO, but the shark one is as complete as I could make it, I will touch it up and make sure it is up to date and then see, will keep you informed. Keep me informed if anyone else jumps at the idea, I would want to see what happens, I do not follow the FLC pages. --Stefan talk 10:00, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
- You are right, timing is important. But we can afford to wait, as the outline needs everything referenced, which will take time. Besides, we don't want it to turn into a move war over the title. So it may be best to nominate it after there are no outlines with "List of" names left. Currently, there are only 3 List of basic x topics titles remaining, but there are still 220 articles in rough outline format entitled List of x topics (including 68 for countries, and 64 for math). Even if those were converted/renamed/merged at one per day, it would take 2/3rds of a year. But that will pass before we know it. Please get the Outline of sharks ready. Consensus, reliable sources, verfiability v. truth and original research
[edit]Stefan, for an editor who has been editing as long as you have, you demonstrate a shocking lack of understanding the policies above. Moreover, having read the Top Chef Masters discussion, I notice you have a tendency to take edits and reverts personally. You may want to give serious consideration to stepping away from the Top Chef article, and arrange to be adopted by a senior editor who can get you far better versed on how to source and verify content, how to reach consensus, and above all how to respect the boundaries of original research. You might also look at WP:SYNTH, which doesn't precisely apply, but into which territory you're straying. -- 199.36.244.11 (talk) 22:15, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
- True I mixed up OWN and OR, will fix it, and I did talk and have only revert once. The edit warring have been done by other. and please use a account and discuss, you seem to at be someone that can discuss. Busy now got to run will fix later. --Stefan talk 23:25, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
- OK, I hear what you say, as a start you can advice in what way I have a shocking lack of understanding. I will list down a few point here that I think is correct, please explain to me when I am wrong and try to explain in what way:
- You can not use the topic itself as a source, this is clear (I think?) for normal topics, like empire state building, I cannot use the argument I saw that the empire state building is blue therefore it is.
- This normally does happens (or at least did long time ago when I started editing) and as long as facts that most people agree on is written down things are OK (and this is WP:OR). But when someone comes and make a claim that all editors does not agree on there is a problem. That is where WP:V comes in, if someone challenges this fact. Now to prove that the empire state building is (or is not) blue I need a source. Preferable a secondary WP:RS.
- WP:Truth is the sad fact that if there is no source for a fact, we write what there aresources for, so a few days ago settlement in america happened 2,500 years later that what it does today. Even if I had argued that this was the fact a few days ago, if I did not have a source we cannot write it.
- WP:SYNTH Tricky, if you say I'm using SYNTH, you must also consider the blog or score card as RS, which you obviously does not. SYNTH is when you use 2 or more RS to use OR to 'create' a new 'fact', what I have done is use the blog or score card as sources, this I think is correct, but they are defiantly not of any higher quality than the show, i agree on that, and we should try to find secondary source, but since the show is challenged the score card and blog supports one interpretation of the show, therefore I think that is correct (but this is really the whole issue, how do we classify seeing the show, and if anyone challenges what others saw (which I do) how do we continue). (do not think that I did not think this through before I raised the issue, I did some quick checks and could not really find anything clear written about when the topic and source is the same and I really look forward to a productive discussion on the issue)
- Consensus is when the editors agree on a way to write the page, normally that means that when enough people agree that this is the way the rest accepts, in this case I have used the argument of consensus since the other editor does not discuss, all his argument is, it was in the show. He does not explain how seeing on the show (which all editors does not agree with) overrides WP:V, or how the topic is a WP:RS. That is why I used consensus as a way of forcing him to explain.
- OK, I hear what you say, as a start you can advice in what way I have a shocking lack of understanding. I will list down a few point here that I think is correct, please explain to me when I am wrong and try to explain in what way:
- You should have seen since you have done some investigation on me, that I have actually only reverted the page once!! The other editor I think 5 times. I have discussed, and discussed, why argue with me and not say anything to him, he has been reverting without commenting and been quite close to 3RR. Are you seriously suggesting that I have been behaving worse than the other editor? If so please explain how, since I actually do listen and want to do the right thing, to me he have been reverting and I have been trying to discuss which is what you should do. I did not even revert the first time when I added the first comment. (please add comments in the text above if you wish) --Stefan talk 05:23, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

- Hi Stefan. This is Norbytherobot. I was accused of being your sock puppet, (by an IP address, nonetheless), which I am clearly not. Apparently that is the new line of battle when a valid argument and reason are no longer on one's side. As much as I agree 100% with your take on the TopChef Season 8 Episode 15 Richard is the winner (b/c Padma said so during the broadcast), I don't enjoy being called anyone's SockPuppet. I just find it insulting. I have to now admit though that I don't know what to do about this, because I am not all that great with the technicals of Wiki editing. I was writing to you b/c I was hoping that you might know how we clear this SockPuppet accusation up so that it is removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Norbytherobot (talk • contribs) 17:30, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
- To 198.228.212.217, please post using your account so that I can discuss with you, also please discuss the ISSUE on the talk page, I try not to revert, but it is hard when there is NO discussion except in edit summaries, then the only way I have to get a comment across is by editing the page, right. I have stated what I think on the talk page Talk:Top Chef (season 8) long time ago, I will update that now in more detail, there is NO response from you or user:Drmargi, I do not understand how you two think! Please discuss so that maybe we can come to an compromise?? .
- I hereby declare that Norbytherobot is not my SOCK, I have no idea who he/she is, I have no control what so even over that account or no way to influence that account. 198.228.212.217 can you say the same of the account user:Drmargi? --Stefan talk 00:26, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
- To Norbytherobot, I'm pretty sure that this is just a 'warning', no one have actually submitted a sock check request (whatever it is called). And since I know that we are not socks, I see no problem no matter what. I will try to pursue this issue of the Top Chef 8 page, but also a bit lost on how to handle one/two editor(s) that refuses to discuss except for in edit summaries. --Stefan talk 00:26, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Mystery
[edit]Please solve this mystery if you can...
On September 23rd, traffic to Portal:James Bond doubled, and has stayed at the new level since then. I can't figure out what happened.
See http://stats.grok.se/en/201109/Portal%3AJames_Bond
Traffic to Outline of James Bond stayed the same (though it was at the higher-level already), which leads me to suspect changes made somewhere in Wikipedia.
See http://stats.grok.se/en/201109/Outline%20of%20James_Bond
I'd like to find out what happened, in case it reveals helpful link placement tips that can double the traffic to outlines.
I look forward to your reply. The Transhumanist 22:18, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
Please help fill in annotations at Portal:Contents/Outlines
[edit]Please go to Portal:Contents/Outlines' and fill in as many missing annotations as you can, even if it's only one or two. Every little bit helps!
The annotating of the entries on Portal:Contents/Outlines is nearing completion.
Annotated entries look like this:
- Basketball – team sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by throwing or "shooting" a ball through the top of a basketball hoop while following a set of rules.
- Canoeing and kayaking – two closely related forms of watercraft paddling, involving manually propelling and navigating specialized boats called canoes and kayaks using a blade that is joined to a shaft, known as a paddle, in the water.
- Cricket – bat-and-ball team sport, the most popular form played on an oval-shaped outdoor arena known as a cricket field at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard (20.12 m) long pitch that is the focus of the game.
- Martial arts – extensive systems of codified practices and traditions of combat, practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental and spiritual development.
Entries needing annotations look like this:
- Industry –
- Construction –
- Architecture –
- Machines –
- Industrial machinery –
- Robotics –
- Mining –
Even if all you can do is one or two, the support will be greatly felt. Many hands make light work.

Hunting for embedded outlines
[edit]I'm looking for outlines embedded in articles.
I've run across a number of these over the years. One example is the Outline of fencing, which used to be part of the fencing article.
If you know about or spot any structured general topics lists in articles, please let me know (on my talk page).
Another thing you might find are articles that are comprised mostly of lists (without "Outline of" or "List of" being in the article's title). If you come across any of these, please report them to me on my talk page. I'd sure like to take a look at them.
Happy hunting.
I look forward to "hearing" from you (on my talk page). Sincerely, The Transhumanist 07:34, 11 June 2013 (UTC)
