Hi Boots,
I am afraid your renaming of Carlos of Portugal to Charles was wrong. The rule is not to translate the name into english but to use the form of name used to refer to that person in english. Hence we have Wilhelm II of Germany, Nicholas II of Russia etc. Most english language users use the last German kaiser's german name, not an english translation. So we call him Wilhelm not William. But most english language users use Nicholas II, not Nikolai, and Victor Emmanuel not Victorio Emanuele. If people generally used Nikolai in preference to Nicholas, then he would be in as Nikolai. Similarly we call the fifth Irish president's gaelic name, Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh not the english translation, Charles Daly, because his gaelic name was used widely to refer to him in preference to any translation. The rule is not to translate things into english but use the form of name used in that person's case by english speakers. If you have redirected any other people to the english translation of their name rather than the version used by english speakers to refer to them then they will all have to be changed back. Otherwise, as in the case of Charles of Portugal, Charles Daly etc we would have forms of names that few people would recognise. lol. FearÉIREANN 19:39 2 Jul 2003 (UTC)
I see you have redirected a lot of portuguese royal names. You are going to have to reverse all the redirects. Petro V is not known in english as Peter V but as Pedro V. Please stop redirecting royal names and restore them all to the agreed format. FearÉIREANN 19:49 2 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Yeah I agree the Portuguese royal names are a mess. All royal names on wiki used to be an absolute mess. Some months ago a gang of us systematically sorted out the mess but either we missed these names or they were put on since and no one noticed them. I did last week but have been away for a while and so had not a chance to fix them. As you appear to be interested in this area you might be interested in Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles) for some of the conventions we worked on last January for royal names. Don't worry, we all make mistakes but I am so glad to see another user is into consistency too. Keep an eye out for User:Deb. She is a great worker in the area. And a guy called John. (I forget his user name. Best of luck. FearÉIREANN 20:12 2 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Please do not rename them at present. Renaming pages can throw links into chaos. More than two links caused by renaming and the links go crazy. One person did this on Japanese emperors and the result took weeks of work by a large number of users to untangle the mess. Only rename them when there is agreement on what they should be. There is no point renaming Petro to Peter when it is going to have to be renamed back to Pedro and the move to Peter may break links and mess up associated articles. Please restore them to the version used by english speakers. That is where the links are connected to with the short chain. It is better to have a mess of names (which personally I hate) than have links broken all over the place. All the pages should be moved if they need to be moved to the version english encyclopædia users use, not the english language version. If you move them then tonight, tomorrow and all during the week people will simply end up changing them back anyway and all your time will be wasted. Don't make extra work for everyone else untangling broken links and renaming pages you have renamed to the wrong version. You will only make the mess in Portuguese names worse. I agree with jtdirl here. It doesn't make any sense to set it up with a "consistency" that you already acknowledge is going to have to be changed. Leave the pages where they are for the moment, if you're not ready to move the ones at an English name to the Portuguese name. "Peter IV of Portugal" is just bizarre, and never used, so far as I know. A wrong consistency is much worse than an inconsistency that at least gets some of the names right. john 23:54 2 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Okay, I'll leave you be for now, if you have a system...But be sure you finish what you start. As far as names, Pedro not Peter, João not John (I tend towards, at least), certainly Maria not Mary, Carlos not Charles. I'd say either Alfonso or Afonso (Affonso?) for those kings. Err... I'm not sure about King Joseph/José. I've probably seen Joseph more frequently in English. Certainly Miguel, and not Michael, for the pretender. Diniz and not Dennis (or whatever his name was). For King Henry/Henrique, I'm not sure. Again, I've seen both. Sebastian and not Sebastião, I think... john 00:29 3 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Dear Boots
I am so glad to hear you are not a banned user. I hope your owner isn't a banned user, either.

Boots, I don't know how incognito you or your owner wish to remain, but there's talk of a meetup in Seattle (notes on my talk page and several other users -- you'll see who if you glance at my talk page) and I thought of mentioning it to you. It's November 6th -- perhaps we'll see you there. :-) Jwrosenzweig 22:30, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC)
