How to submit

[edit]

The name proposals must follow the following guidelines: Guidelines may change or be ammended without notice

  1. They must be valid, legal usernames. No profanity, please.
  2. They must not contain the word troll, or any other word or concept that may be overly inflammatory.
  3. Names should (but are not required to) maintain the "clockwork" concept (such as, "robotic", for example) while still maintaining a "charming frivolity".

Simply create a new subheading to the bottom of the page, and begin making your comments beneath it:

====ClockworkHippie====
Groovy name, man. ~~~~

You may submit as many names as you can think of, without limitation. The contest ends on 19 November 2004. The most creative yet practical name (i.e., the one I like most) will get to Name the Admin Candidate!

Good luck!

  • Are anti-trolls gnome? I think not. 'Though I like the idea. - UtherSRG 16:13, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • This one's pretty funny! I can already feel the barbs if and when I need to settle left vs. right political disputes, though. ClockworkTroll 17:42, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

  • I kind of think its funny... Just as funny as having you change a name because several users object. Surely we should be looking at your past history, not your name! - Ta bu shi da yu 16:25, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • Even though it's early in the process, I probably could have stood my ground an not changed my name. Although I assumed at first that they were being reactionary, they did make at least one good point: the name could make my life difficult in the long term. Plus, this way I get to hold a contest, which can be fun! ClockworkTroll 16:41, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • I like this one - the same flavour as your current name and a fun image in itself -- sannse (talk) 21:20, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • I like it too. Tuf-Kat 21:43, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC)
    • It's cute, it's a colorful image, and it's close enough to your old name that the change will be minimally confusing. So far I think it is the best on the list. Antandrus 21:47, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • This is good, but I'm not sure how I feel about being named after a burrowing rodent... ClockworkTroll 21:53, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

    • Youre not a burrowing rodent—you're an undercover spy! I like this one. A little bit of absurdity in your user name is not a bad thing. -[[User:Aranel|Aranel ("Sarah")]] 00:19, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • This one seems to be a crowd favorite so far. Nobody likes ClockworkFrog? ClockworkTroll 00:25, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • This whole thing started because people didn't like the slang meaning of "troll" to refer to someone engaging in online misconduct. I wonder if they'd have a problem with "mole" -- which can mean an enemy infiltrator sent to gain confidence and learn secrets. Maybe they'll think you work for Britannica. DarkForce

[edit]
  • and this one - Adrian Pingstone
  • Not bad, but I'm not sure it suit my personality. I prefer a name that it quirky, not "dark", and just unusual enough to be memorable without being intimidating. ClockworkTroll 16:43, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

ClockworkTroglodyte

[edit]
  • Is almost the same as a troll ... Elf-friend 16:42, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • I like it! PedanticallySpeaking 16:43, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC)
    • I like it too, but it's very long. ClockworkTroll 17:19, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
      • You are right about the length, my handle is too long to type very much. PedanticallySpeaking 18:14, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC)
    • Clever, and close to the original, but too many syllables to be catchy. Antandrus 17:36, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • I like it too. It can be shortened to ClockworkTrog if needed. --mav 17:41, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
      • Or maybe even ClockTrog? (Try to say that quickly three times :-D) Elf-friend 18:19, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • I like this one. Andre (talk) 17:42, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC)
    • Ooh, another good one. WRT to length, I'd recommend user "ClockworkTroglodyte" as the full name but abbreviating it to ClockTrog or something in sigs. Tuf-Kat 21:44, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC)

ClockworkQuirk

[edit]
  • Well, it's quirky. I also tried an anagram generator on your name but it comes up empty (the "k"s are a problem). Fuzzy anagrams get some weird ones: LockworkTruck, ClickworkTock, etc. ClickworkTrill? ClickworkTrick? Hmmm... kind of a fun game. Antandrus 17:36, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • Actually - this one is really interesting! Keep it up! ClockworkTroll 17:40, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Okay, I saw you mention you wanted a 'quirky' name, so I was about to make a new section for my idea, but Andre brought to my attention this thread just in time. So, instead, I'll just submit my idea here: Cloquirk. Unique and short. :O Another possibility: 'Cloquirky.' Silence 11:14, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Mechagnome

[edit]
  • Or alternately "MechaGnome" but I like this without the capital G. Andre (talk) 17:49, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC)
    • Amazing, I tried to post "MechoGnome" and ran into this edit conflict. I like the capital G better because it lends itself to "MG" as an informal nickname. I was trying to get as short as possible while still invoking your old toy. I've wished that I'd picked a shorter user name because people don't like to write out even ten letters when referring to me in a discussion. JamesMLane 17:57, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • I can always go with the music pun: MetroGnome... (har, har). ClockworkTroll 18:32, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
      • That pun is currently in use I believe. Alkivar 18:47, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

CT

[edit]
  • How about just CT? Clean and quick. You can explain what it's short for on your user page as part of giving the story of the name, but it won't cause confusion elsewhere. And in this case you won't wholly be "changing your name", just abbreviating it. Second best would be ClockworkT. VeryVerily 00:00, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • It is neat and clean, but heck, if I'm in for a penny, I'm in for a pound. Any name I take on should be interesting enough to be memorable. ClockworkTroll 01:56, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

ClockworkGnome

[edit]
  • Quite similar to ClockworkTroll, but without any possibly perceived negative connotations. And it's also a funny twist on the Magic: The Gathering card "Clockwork Gnomes", which appeared in the Homelands expansion long ago. What do you think? I like it, myself. ^^ -- Schnee 01:58, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • That was a great game, in its heyday. I remeber when my friends used to call it "paper crack", and would sometimes torment over whether to pay rent or buy more cards. ClockworkTroll 02:11, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
      • Heh... yeah, I remember spending loads and loads of money on it myself. Too much really, in hindsight, but at least it was fun. -- Schnee 16:37, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Both a clockwork (an Egyptian waterclock, perhaps implying a fluidity and ability to adapt to... change?) and an animal (a single-cell critter similar to a hydra, but may have a medical application healing nerves... hmmm, appropriate for an admin, no?) - Amgine 05:01, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

That already was suggested above (see section 4.22). -- Schnee 00:57, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

ClockworkDroll

  • I can't believe this didn't come to my mind sooner. Certainly maintains the "charming frivolity", ie the Merriam-Webster dictionary describes droll as "an amusing person". Also only one letter different, therefore keeping it familiar to people. Shane King 08:03, Nov 15, 2004 (UTC)

Hehe. But I think names that imply authority, such as "sys0p" or "adm1n" or "TheAdmin" are discouraged / banned. — David Remahl 22:36, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Actually I'd say that on Wiki they imply very little (if any) authority as it is clearly stated that sysops have no editorial authority whatsoever.
