[edit]Wondering how to edit this U.S. County Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Counties standards might help.
Addition of a History section
[edit]I wrote my master's thesis on Northumberland County (covering the years from 1651 to 1665), so had to find out about the origin of the county. Some of this info was taken from the county's website, which is already cited in the map section.

Minor Edits to Significant Villages
[edit]Made some minor changes to the significant "villages" in Northumberland. The county is extremely rural, and there are no large towns to speak of. However, Callao is considered the largest "town" in Northumberland, and was not included on the list. The Wicomico Church area is also a distinct part of Northumberland not represented by the other locations. I also changed the spelling of "Fair Port" to its correct local spelling "Fairport".
I was raised in Northumberland County my entire life, and stand by the accuracy of these edits.

Wealthiest Town In America?
[edit]I would like to see a citation for this line:
"Reedville, a town of approximately 500, was once known as the wealthiest town in the United States due to the large sums of money produced by the menhaden industry"
Never heard this before and would like to see a citation of a source before leaving it in there.

Everyone who grew up in Reedville (I'm a native) has heard this. Not sure of the original source, but its commonly known. Miriam Haynie, a very well respected local historian, mentioned it in her book about Reedville that was published in 1974 in honor of the town's centennial. If Miriam wrote it; its true. The Library of Congress probably would not accept that as a citation, but you can take it to bank.
I guess that story never made it up to Burgess, because I never heard it before :-) My mother was close to Miriam Haynie, and I spent many afternoons as a child in her home in Reedville. I know she was a well-trusted resource on Northern Neck history. If there is any way to reference her book as a citation here, I think that would be enough of a source for Wikipedia. --Goosedoggy 21:40, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
