[edit]

I'm not 100% satisfied with this template, but it represents a compromise. I'd like the template to italicize the game title automatically, but if it did, then I couldn't use it for series as well. Also the "id" portion is a bit longer than I'd like, but that is due to MobyGame's categoriztion methods. For example, they have one "dos" section and another "nes" section and so on. So, in order to work for all games, everything after "game" in the URL has to be included. I'd appreciate any feedback on ways to improve it.

Once this template is finalized, I can create other template for developer "rap sheets" and video game publishers & developers at MobyGames. I created this one first since I think games are what it is most widely used for. Frecklefoot | Talk 19:11, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

I've created template:moby developer for developers' MobyGames pages. Alphonze 11:19, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

TfD nomination of Template:MobyGames

[edit]

Wow, that's insane. It's a unanimous keep whose decision is "very weak keep". Lame. -- Sy / (talk) 09:52, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the nomination discussion could've been closed with a speedy-keep instead. (Martinp23 marked it "Very weak keep (by default)" because of how fast the TfD tag was removed from the template.) --82.170.113.123 (talk) 21:26, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, after reading the second nomination discussion, I agree with Martinp23's decision. --82.170.113.123 (talk) 21:31, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

slash unnecessary

[edit]

The slash "/" is unnecessary since just linking to the the game name (i.e. "tomb-raider") will go to the main game page that links to the various platform-specific pages. I propose this template is edited to take that into account, or a new template created. ∞ΣɛÞ² (τ|c) 08:21, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added the slash before the id, because I saw a link on Fairlight (video game) which was using this template incorrectly. Now it seems that the other uses of the template which do id=/gamename have the duplicate slash. I propose that the "/" be removed from the game page's, and we keep this "/" within this template. Right now there's no harm that the other games have urls like http://www.mobygames.com/game//gamename but games which are like http://www.mobygames.com/gamegamename can be fixed. -- Sy / (talk) 09:49, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you include the slash in the template, you can't use the template to link to game series, for example, this:
Heroes of Might and Magic series at MobyGames
doesn't work if you include the slash in the template. That's why it wasn't included in the first place. People using the template incorrectly is no reason to change it. — Frecklefσσt | Talk 16:32, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

{{editprotected}} The interwiki to Dutch Wikipedia is wrong. It says "MobyGames" now but should be "Link MobyGames". Sander (talk) 18:41, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you mean. Feel free to make the change yourself, as all interwiki links are on the Documentation page which isn't protected. GFOLEY FOUR21:04, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, didn't know that. Sander (talk) 13:52, 20 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"id" weirdness

[edit]

The form for "ID" is just plain strange. Would it be possible to get an alternate format for "url=" where the entire URL can be entered? Maury Markowitz (talk) 16:17, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

MobyGames is now TLS-only, and all current pages generated by the MobyGames template redirect to their secure variants. I am requesting you change the template so that it's secure by default, to avoid redirects: simply add an "s" after http in the URL in order to do this. — SolarStarSpire (talk) 00:34, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Correction: it seems MobyGames is -not- TLS-only; it still supports visiting the website on an http connection. I was mistaken as I had the HTTPS Everywhere extension enabled which prevented me from verifying this. In spite of this, I still support changing the template to its secure variant, as it is preferable to http. — SolarStarSpire (talk) 23:31, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I created this template way back when, but I'm scared to alter it now that it's used by so many pages. Someone else better with templates will have to make the change. — Frεcklεfσσt | Talk 01:11, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please consider changing the template to use the protocol-relative URL //www.mobygames.com/game{{Trim|{{{1|{{{id}}}}}}}} instead of the current http://www.mobygames.com/game{{Trim|{{{1|{{{id}}}}}}}} URL. This would help to facilitate both HTTP and HTTPS requests to MobyGames pages. Thanks. --Elegie (talk) 17:09, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How do you get the ID?

[edit]

I recently used the template for the first time in years, and found it didn't work because I failed to add the ID. It took me several tries before I got it working. Again, what is the reason we simply don't use the entire URL instead of this "ID"? Maury Markowitz (talk) 18:40, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

So you don't have to include http://www.mobygames.com/game for every game. That prefix is the same for every game at MobyGames. — Frεcklεfσσt | Talk 20:33, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Instead we confuse every user. Are we running out of bytes that this is a problem that we couldn't make optional? Maury Markowitz (talk) 19:34, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Template seems to be broken for groups

[edit]

Currently, it looks like game groups on MobyGames use a format of group/number/name, instead of the former format of game-group/name. This means that the template doesn't work for groups at all. Bhtooefr (talk) 00:18, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
