Mytilene, an Amazon princess, gave her name to that city of island Lesbos.

Turkish name: yes or no?

[edit]

Since some contention is brewing here as to whether or not to include the name in Turkish, I suggest everyone register their opinion here as to why or why not. (I will not vote, as I know nothing of the subject.) Perhaps an overall consensus can be formed. - Che Nuevara: Join the Revolution 12:47, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No. The island is Greek. English speakers may be interested in the name in Greek for that reason only. We don't have multiple language names for other places. Why here? Student7 (talk) 13:06, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Depends IMO on whether there's any significant Turkish history that would lead to an English speaker finding the name of interest (we should be focused on our readers, after all). For some Greek cities this is true (e.g. Alexandroupoli); likewise for some Turkish cities (e.g. Trabzon). I'm not sure whether it's true of Mytilene, but the current article doesn't give any reason that it is—it seems to discuss exclusively the island in ancient Greece and in modern Greece, with nothing about its Ottoman history. Did anything of note happen during the Ottoman period? --Delirium (talk) 00:38, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
@CheNuevara, @Delirium and @Student7. I don't know if you are still here. The island of Lesbos is mentioned together with the Ottoman in many academic studies and still carries the Turkish-Ottoman culture. A researcher will need the Turkish and Ottoman Turkish name of the island to learn about the situation of the island in the Ottoman period. That's why I added the name to the article. history?

[edit]

This island is significant in Greek history, escpecially concerning the Athenian conquest after their revolt in 428 BCE. Someone please fill in this gaping hole in the article.

I'll expand a bit: the Athenians wanted to massacre the men and enslave everyone else. There was a big debate, and they changed their minds (at the last minute). Thucydides goes into this. Brutannica 05:10, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Titular bishopric?

[edit]

An unregistered user suggested that one of the auxiliary bishops of Lisbon was often the titular bishop of Mytilene which is useful and interesting information. I could not find this documented, however. See, for example, Lisbon hierarchy. A footnote would be needed. Probably needs to be placed in article under religion or something but probably not in intro. Also should be in Wikipedia article on the Archdiocese of Lisbon (patriarch, actually). Origin

[edit]

Mytilene was originally a colony. Was it a colony of Athens or of another of the Greek states? Deipnosophista (talk) 13:59, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
