Yio Chu Kang (/ˌjoʊ tʃuː ˈkʌŋ/ YOH choo KUNG), alternatively spelt as Yeo Chu Kang, is a sub-urban area in the northeast of Singapore, with proximity to the Ang Mo Kio, Lentor, Seletar and Sengkang areas. Deriving its name from the Yio Chu Kang Village, it is still known for lush greenery and low-density housing with high-rise public housing in its southern fringes.
Background
[edit]The name Yio Chu Kang, similar to Choa Chu Kang and Lim Chu Kang did not come from names of famous people unlike many other road names in Singapore. The word 'Kang' - means river, while 'Chu' was apparently a clan. The word 'Chu' itself means "owner" or "land". The clan was hence named Kangchu because it was controlled by the Chu clan and they were situated around a river. The north of Singapore was split and given to different leaders of the Kangchu clan, and they took the name of the leader. Hence the names Yio Chu Kang, Lim Chu Kang and Choa Chu Kang.[1][citation needed][better source needed]

Incident
[edit]On 25 December 2003, the 8 year old girl was abducted by 2 abductors Chua Ser Lien and Tan Ping Koon while her mother was busy preparing for Christmas buffet dinner that afternoon. First abductor Chua, who covered his face with a silky sash, alighted the MPV car and he swiftly entered the victim’s house to dragged by lifting her to the vehicle & sped away. Chua and Tan were being caught in the act by two catering assistants, one of whom took down the license plate number. The sighting of the girl's abduction was relayed to one of the two catering assistants' husband and when he spotted the getaway car, he decided to trail after them in his own vehicle. The two abductors, having realized they were being tailed, decided to abort their original kidnapping plan and drop the girl off at Tampines Expressway shoulder lane, merely thirty minutes after they abducted the girl, who was subsequently brought back home safely by the caterer driver who chased the duo's van. The police tailed both Chua and Tan, who both collected the ransom of $70,000 at the pick-up point, and not knowing that they were followed, the men went to Tampines to have lunch at a coffee shop. After lunchtime, the plainclothes policemen arrested 2 kidnappers and the cash of $70,000 were successfully recovered.
Both Chua Ser Lien & Tan Ping Koon were guilty of kidnapping by ransom & sentenced to life imprisonment with caning. In 2020, Chua committed suicide by falling from the staircase to the ground level while serving his life sentence in Changi Prison. Remaining abductor Tan was serving remaining 4 years to complete his life sentence. If behaved well in prison it is possible than Tan after serving at least twenty years of his sentence, can be released on parole should he reached the conditions for eligibility.
