[edit]During the 1960s there used to be fairly serious deliberately set fires on the Common among heather that surrounded the larger of the two ponds. I heard boys had used petrol. Fire engines used to turn up and they were a terrible nuisance.
Fire of London Memorial - Check dates!
[edit]A stone and brick obelisk was erected on Putney Heath in 1770, marking the 110th anniversary of the Great Fire of London...
I query the dates as they stand - the Great Fire was in 1666, so was only 104 years in the past to 1770. Is 1770 the correct date of the memorial's unveiling? (I do allow for possibility of literal 'monumental' error on inscription, which should be mentioned if that is the case.) Cloptonson (talk) 06:30, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
Putney Heath
[edit]I think there is some confusing occurring because this page is labelled Wimbledon Common, and not Wimbledon Common and Putney Heath. This page is for Wimbledon common and Putney Heath and so needs a rename. I think this is where previous (now-corrected) discrepancies in site area have arisen from. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jgdb500 (talk • contribs) 19:36, 7 February 2015 (UTC) Jgdb500 (talk) 19:38, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
- I don't think there's a problem myself - Putney Heath and the official combined name both redirect here, as they should, and Putney Lower Common has its own page (which arguably might be merged here). I think Wimbledon Common is the most common name (except in Putney I suppose) which we should use. The lead is sufficiently clear on the matter, though the area figures may have been confused.
