Blurb for DYK
[edit]Did You Know
... that Sarah Brady became a leading leading advocate of gun control and other actions to reduce the amount of gun violence in the United States after her husband White House Press Secretary James Brady sustained a disabling head wound during the Reagan assassination attempt which occurred on March 30, 1981?
Honorary doctorate degrees
[edit]Its not really conventional to call someone a Dr. just because they have an honorary doctorate.--nixie 10:55, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
- I had some doubts when I did that, so I have removed it in the name. The mention of the award is still in the article. Thanks. Vaoverland 18:40, May 9, 2005 (UTC)
Refutation
[edit]So would it be appropriate to insert counter-arguments here, or what? This page reads as rather frightfully pro-gun control. Stiletto Null 08:07, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
- Sarah Brady and her husband James are unquestionably pro-gun control, notwithstanding her incident with the straw purchase. I think a pro/con NPOV argument would be be more appropriate in the article on Gun politics. If you feel strongly, i feel that is the place to make sure the NPOV is presented. Fair use rationale for Image:Bn050502 80.gif
[edit]Image:Bn050502 80.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 03:22, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
False inherent logic
[edit]This sentence "Despite her support for gun control, she bought her adult son a hunting rifle as a Christmas present" implies that supporters of gun control believe no one should own guns. This is not true. The gun control position is that guns should be better regulated. I'm removing this sentence. Chisme (talk) 00:00, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Chisme:, @Rms125a@hotmail.com:, I'm a bit on the fence about this one. On the one hand, we shouldn't be editorializing in the enclyclopedia's voice. Period. On the other, Brady herself said "It seemed so incredibly strange: Sarah Brady, of all people, packing heat." Is there a better way to phrase it? Faceless Enemy (talk) 12:21, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- Well, we are supposed to impart reliable info without POV. I don't think the excerpt regarding the issue of the gun purchase for her son violates NPOV, but if you do I am sure it can be tweaked. It should be included, however, in some form, as quite relevant. I personally never had any animus against Sarah Brady, nor have I ever owned a gun. I also respected her for coping with considerable tragedy and misfortune. Quis separabit? 12:34, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- I think it's worth tweaking, yeah. As Chisme pointed out, we need to avoid implying that supporters of gun control believe no one should own guns. Maybe "while continuing to support gun control" instead of "despite her support for gun control"? Faceless Enemy (talk) 12:54, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- I'll tweak it. The essential thing is not to imply that people in support of gun control are gun banners, which is what it implies at present. You can own guns and support gun control. Chisme (talk) 22:09, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- "Brady was not in favor of banning guns" is definitely false. See here, where they are in favor of a ban on some guns. Faceless Enemy (talk) 22:16, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- Precisely. They are in favor of banning SOME kinds of guns, but not ALL guns. So it's false to say "Despite her support for gun control, she bought her adult son a hunting rifle as a Christmas present" if the gun she gave as a present, a hunting rifle, was not one of the types of guns her organization proposes banning. Her organization wanted to ban high-capacity so-called assault rifles, not hunting rifles. I'm switching this back. Chisme (talk) 18:52, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
- Still not true. There are some hunting rifles that are banned as assault weapons in some jurisdictions. For now I've just removed it. I think the paragraph before it provides enough context. Faceless Enemy (talk) 20:21, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
- We disagree but I'll let it stand as preferable to what was before. I do believe, however, in making distinctions. Chisme (talk) 21:58, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
- Chisme, I agree with you on that sentence. It seems undue and POV in light of the small amount of text dedicated to Brady's opinions about and work for gun control. These should be developed, following NPOV, if that sentence is to stay. Lightbreather (talk) 02:14, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
- I agree. This sticks out like a sore thumb. It was a small part of her life. And an attempt to present her as a hypocrite. Chisme (talk) 16:52, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
Sources
[edit]I was working on the Luby's shooting article when I came across this source:
- Hart, Lianne; Wood, Tracy (October 17, 1991). "23 Shot Dead at Texas Cafeteria". Los Angeles Times. p. 3.
It has a great quote from Brady that she made on the day of the shooting:
- Does the U.S. House need a clearer message before it musters the courage to stand up to the gun lobby? Tomorrow, the whole world will be watching.
(It was a strange coincidence that an omnibus anti-crime bill was in the House when the shooting took place.)
I am still working on the shooting and I might be back here with more sources if I get a chance. I am retiring soon, but this biography could use some work. Lightbreather (talk) 01:51, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

"It was a strange coincidence that an omnibus anti-crime bill was in the House when the shooting took place." Your suggestion being that Luby's shooting was planned in order to help pass a gun control bill. Anyone who reads this may note that Lightbreather was yet another gun advocate on Wikipedia crowding this place with pro-gun views. She (I assume it's a "she"] was site banned from Wikipedia and later claimed to have quit due to sexual harassment (see her Talk page). Preposterous. Chisme (talk) 16:20, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
