Family members info
[edit]While doing some research of 1930 census records I came across Charlie Parker Jr and his parents Charles Sr and Addie in the 1930 census living on W34 st Kansas City.
https://www.familysearch.org/search/film/004951783?i=14&cc=1810731.
Ages recorded are: Sr. 41 years, Addie 32 years, Jr 9 yrs, and the age of his parents at their first marriage as 27 (Charles) and 18 (Addie), so they were married in about 1916.
I somehow ended up looking at the Findagrave entry for Charlie Parker then his family. His entry shows a photo of him interred next to his mother who died in 1967. The entry includes links to the entry for Chan Berg (1925-1999), and a son Leon Francis (1938-2004), but no mention of Baird who is included as his son in this article. I'm putting this here because somebody ho has more than a passing interest might want to dig around and find records for Leon Francis Parker that establishes his parentage for inclusion in this article, also for something more official that establishes the parentage of Baird. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:EA01:1090:FD6E:1026:8434:5BF3 (talk) 08:24, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
- Speaking of which, who are the heirs to his estate? Who gets the royalties that would have gone to Charlie Parker?Dogru144 (talk) 05:00, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
Charlie Parker Records
[edit]There was a record label using his name: Charlie Parker Records, active from 1961 to 1965. Recordings by the late Parker and other noteworthy jazz musicians appeared on that label. Does this not suffice an article on the record label?Dogru144 (talk) 22:37, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
- I would say maybe. But the problem is there are just SO many small record labels it is impractical. 2600:8805:4310:B900:210D:BC0F:B849:5E7F (talk) 16:18, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
"Correct" usage, or Racism?
[edit]The ability to read this article is greatly marred by the constant "Citation needed" interruptions. There were not as many newspapers etc. for Black Americans of the segregation era so of course it is difficult to footnote everything. I don't say that Racism is intended, but it is working out that way, it equates to disparaging the article.
An icon would be sufficient, if even that, because it really is senseless proctoring to even do it at all. 2600:8805:4310:B900:210D:BC0F:B849:5E7F (talk) 16:16, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
- WP:V applies to all articles equally. The lack of contemporaneous sources in the segregation era is not a problem that Wikipedia can fix. The addition of the standard {cn} tags here, or in any other article, is not "racist". Martinevans123 (talk) 16:21, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
- I added some of these tags (though not all of them) for good reason. Some of the statements in this article that were uncited or improperly cited would never have survived in a biography of a living person because they are borderline slanderous.
- Here are some quotes that were tagged by someone, not necessarily me:
- "Before this session, Parker drank a quart[clarification needed] of whiskey." -The source cited doesn't mention a quart, and even if it did, any comments coming from Ross Russell (the producer of the session) should be removed due to his fabrication of historical details.
- "Parker was admired for his unique style of phrasing and innovative use of rhythm. Through his recordings and the popularity of the posthumously published Charlie Parker Omnibook, Parker's identifiable style dominated jazz for many years to come." -I'm sure this is true, but it's uncited and therefore WP:OR. Also some puff here; "many years to come" is not specific. This is exactly why sources are needed; they force editors to use specific information rather than vague generalizations that come naturally in opinionated or narrative writing.
- "Other well-known Parker compositions include "Ah-Leu-Cha", "Anthropology" (co-written with Gillespie), "Confirmation", "Constellation", "Moose the Mooche", "Scrapple from the Apple" and "Yardbird Suite", the vocal version of which is called "What Price Love", with lyrics by Parker." -lyrics by Parker? This needs to be cited; I've never heard of this before.
- "Lennie Tristano's overdubbed solo piano piece "Requiem" was recorded in tribute to Parker shortly after his death." -source? Again, this may be true, but we need sources. Just because Tristano wrote a piece with this title in 1955 does not mean he wrote it for Parker. The editor needs a source to claim that.
- "Parker was buried at Lincoln Cemetery in Missouri, in a hamlet known as Blue Summit, located close to I-435 and East Truman Road." -again, we need a source.
- There's quite a detailed source about his death and burial here, but no mention of "I-435 and East Truman Road". Martinevans123 (talk) 08:31, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
- "organized a lying-in-state" -source?
- See source above. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:31, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
- "organized a lying-in-state" -source?
- "Bebop soon gained wider appeal among musicians and fans alike." -WP:OR
- "The accident led to Parker's ultimate troubles with painkillers and opioids, especially heroin. Parker struggled with drug use for the rest of his life." -there are many sources attributing drug addiction but to claim his accident caused a drug addiction that continued throughout the rest of his life needs a source.
- Many of these could actually be sourced quite easily. My intention for the long run, however, has been to give this article a more serious rewrite with well-sourced information. I'd kind of forgotten about that but seeing the comments here reminds me that this article is in rough shape and could do with some attention. --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 01:35, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
Tributes
[edit]I would suggest that the musical and other tributes to Charlie Parker be moved to a separate page, as many of them are not cited, have little to no connection to the subject of the article beyond a title or token tribute, and are bloating the article. We have a separate tribute page, for example, titled Tributes to the Beatles. --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 20:27, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
